The temporarily closed runway, commissioned in the late 2000s, has supported uninterrupted operations for close to two decades. Aviation planners indicate that sustained aircraft movements, increased load intensity, and natural material fatigue have made a full-scale overhaul unavoidable. Unlike routine maintenance cycles, the upcoming works involve structural strengthening, surface renewal, and navigation system upgrades to meet evolving global safety benchmarks. Despite the closure, airport authorities expect daily aircraft movement capacity to remain unchanged through operational adjustments. Revised flight scheduling, optimised use of remaining runways, and coordination between airlines and air traffic management systems have been factored into the transition plan. At the core of the upgrade is the installation of advanced landing guidance infrastructure designed to improve aircraft approach reliability during adverse weather conditions, particularly winter fog events common in North India. A new rapid exit taxiway is also being developed to reduce runway occupancy time, enabling faster aircraft clearance and improving on-ground efficiency. These interventions are expected to contribute to lower fuel burn and reduced emissions from idling aircraft, aligning airport operations with wider climate efficiency goals. Urban planners note that Delhi Airport’s phased modernisation strategy mirrors challenges faced by other megacity transport nodes balancing capacity growth with sustainability.
