Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) is set to modernise house tax assessments with the launch of a digital Property Tax Management System (PTMS), aiming to ensure transparency and accuracy. The system will map every building in the city, reconcile recorded data with actual built-up areas, and verify property usage and ownership. By reducing errors, preventing overcharging or under-assessment, and improving accountability, PTMS is expected to transform how residents interact with municipal taxation and support equitable urban governance
For years, property tax collection in Lucknow has faced criticism for discrepancies in assessments, often leading to disputes between residents and municipal staff. Smaller properties were sometimes taxed at inflated rates, while large or expanded buildings remained under-assessed or entirely outside the tax net. Misclassification of residential and commercial properties further contributed to inconsistencies and complaints, highlighting the need for a more systematic approach.The introduction of PTMS represents a significant step toward resolving these issues. By creating a digital, building-wise database, LMC aims to ensure that every property is accurately assessed based on verified dimensions, usage, and ownership. Once uploaded, the information cannot be manually altered, reducing the scope for errors or subjective judgement in tax calculations. Officials will be able to compare actual built-up areas with registered data, enabling the identification of both under-assessed properties and tax defaulters.
Ashok Singh, chief tax assessment officer at LMC, explained, “PTMS will provide transparency by digitally mapping each property and linking verified data. Property owners and senior officials can access the information to see how tax amounts are calculated, bringing accountability at every level.” Residents will also have the ability to verify their assessments, reducing misunderstandings and enhancing trust between citizens and municipal authorities.The system is expected to have broader administrative benefits as well. Continuous monitoring by the municipal commissioner and senior officials will streamline follow-up on unpaid dues and ensure timely revenue collection. Accurate property tax data can also inform urban planning decisions, helping allocate resources more efficiently for infrastructure projects, public amenities, and green spaces.
