Indian Railways has taken a proactive step towards enhancing passenger experience by introducing pocket-friendly meal options tailored specifically for General Class passengers.
Initially launched at 51 stations last year, this service has garnered praise and demand, prompting its expansion to over 100 stations across the railway network. The collaboration between Indian Railways and Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) aims to address the longstanding challenge of providing clean and affordable meals and snacks to passengers, particularly those traveling in unreserved compartments. Recognising the impending surge in summer travel, an IRCTC official emphasised the importance of catering to the needs of passengers, especially those in unreserved compartments who may face difficulties in finding budget-friendly meal options. In response to this demand, IRCTC is rolling out two types of meals Economy meals and Snack meals.
Economy meals, priced at Rs. 20, cater to passengers on the move, offering a fulfilling yet economical dining option. On the other hand, Snack meals, priced at Rs. 50, provide a lighter alternative for passengers seeking a quick bite during their journey. To ensure accessibility, these meals and water are conveniently available at counters located near unreserved compartments on platforms, making it easier for General Class passengers to access affordable dining options while traveling. The expansion of this initiative underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to improving passenger amenities and catering to the diverse needs of travellers across different classes. By offering budget-friendly meal services, Indian Railways aims to enhance the overall travel experience for General Class passengers, making train journeys more comfortable and convenient for all.
