Telangana Government Selling 9300 Acres Industrial Land Valued At Rs 5 Lakh Crore

The Telangana Industrial Land Transformation Policy has come under scrutiny as BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) alleged that the Congress government is selling off 9,300 acres of industrial land valued at nearly Rs 5 lakh crore. The claims, made via social media, highlight concerns over the disposal of government-held lands originally intended for employment generation and industrial development.

According to KTR, these land parcels, allocated to promote industry and generate jobs, are being handed over to private developers at prices far below market value, undermining their intended purpose. “These prime lands were provided by the government to create employment and industrial growth. Selling them to private interests for commercial gains compromises public benefit,” he said. The BRS leader urged authorities to reclaim the lands and ensure they are used effectively for schools, hospitals, housing for the economically weaker sections, parks, and infrastructure. The controversy gained momentum following the sale of a prime 53.5-acre parcel in Attibele, Karnataka, by Infosys to Puravankara for Rs 250 crore. Congress MP Karti P. Chidambaram had criticised such deals, stating that lands granted at concessional rates for specific purposes should not be monetised commercially without returning proceeds to the government. Drawing parallels, KTR reiterated similar concerns for Telangana.

Industry experts note that the misallocation of industrial land can have long-term economic consequences, including stunted industrial growth and reduced public infrastructure development. “When industrial lands are diverted for residential or commercial projects without strategic planning, cities risk losing opportunities for balanced urban growth,” said a senior urban planner. KTR also warned real estate developers against participating in speculative deals, noting that BRS would take corrective measures if the party returns to power. He highlighted the disparity between market prices and government-set rates, claiming that while prime land could command around Rs 1 lakh per square yard, the government is offering it for as low as Rs 4,000. The allegations come amid broader debates over urban land management, industrial policy, and the role of state governments in balancing public and private interests. Analysts emphasise the importance of transparent land allocation policies to ensure sustainable urbanisation, equitable economic growth, and job creation.

While the Congress government has not issued a formal response, the debate underscores the need for accountability in managing state assets, particularly industrial lands, which are critical for inclusive economic development and urban infrastructure planning in Telangana.
