New Delhi Railway Station Redevelopment Aims To Serve Seven Lakh Daily

New Delhi is set for a major transformation of its central railway station as Indian Railways plans to redevelop the facility under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. With the objective of doubling train originating capacity by 2030, the project seeks to accommodate rising commuter traffic while enhancing passenger experience and integrating sustainable urban transport solutions. The redevelopment is expected to significantly improve efficiency for one of India’s busiest transport hubs.

Northern Railway officials have outlined plans to construct two new station buildings alongside Platforms 1 and 16, replacing the existing structures. The new facilities will have a combined built-up area of approximately 1,09,000 square metres, designed to handle up to seven lakh passengers daily, a sharp increase from the current capacity of four lakh. “The redevelopment focuses on creating a passenger-centric station while ensuring smooth operational flows for trains and city transit integration,” an official said. The design incorporates dedicated holding areas, apron zones to facilitate seamless movement between elevated roads and station entrances, and integrated retail spaces. This reflects a broader trend in Indian urban planning where transit hubs are developed as mixed-use spaces, reducing congestion while offering economic opportunities. Experts note that such infrastructure investments are critical to meet the demands of rapidly growing metropolitan populations.

Additionally, the redevelopment will enhance connectivity with other city transport modes, including Metro lines, buses, and e-mobility solutions. According to industry analysts, this integration not only reduces last-mile travel challenges but also contributes to reducing carbon emissions by promoting public transport over private vehicles. “Developing stations as multimodal hubs aligns with sustainable urban mobility goals and creates more equitable access to city infrastructure,” an urban transport expert said. The project is part of a larger initiative by Indian Railways to expand originating capacity across 48 major cities over the next five years. Ten stations under Northern Railway, including New Delhi, have been identified for phased upgrades, which will combine modern construction technology, digital management systems, and enhanced passenger facilities. The plan is expected to boost operational efficiency while maintaining high safety and environmental standards.

Once completed, the new station buildings will not only ease congestion but also provide a more comfortable, secure, and inclusive environment for daily commuters. With integrated technology, clear navigation systems, and improved amenities, the redevelopment aims to transform New Delhi Railway Station into a world-class urban transport hub that sets benchmarks for sustainable city infrastructure across India.
