NMMC Introduces Harit Mahacity Compost Brand For City Organic Waste Management

Navi Mumbai has secured state approval to market organic manure under the certified brand Harit Mahacity Compost, marking a significant milestone in the city’s sustainable waste management and agriculture initiatives. The brand, sanctioned by the Maharashtra government, officially recognises compost produced from biodegradable wet waste and dry leaf litter at the city’s solid waste processing facilities. This endorsement adds to Navi Mumbai’s growing reputation as a leading clean city under India’s ‘Super Swachh League’.

The Maharashtra Urban Development Department developed the Harit Mahacity Compost brand to encourage high-quality, scientifically processed organic manure for commercial use. Compost produced at NMMC facilities adheres strictly to the Fertiliser Control Order (FCO) standards and state solid waste management rules, ensuring consistent quality for agricultural applications. With this certification, NMMC can now market and sell compost while simultaneously reducing waste volume directed to dumping sites. At the Turbhe solid waste processing plant, NMMC converts municipal wet waste into 30–40 metric tonnes of organic manure daily. This compost has been used extensively in municipal gardens and is increasingly being offered to local farmers, providing an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical fertilisers. Experts note that such initiatives not only improve soil health and plant productivity but also advance circular economy practices by closing the nutrient loop within urban ecosystems.

An official highlighted that the initiative supports sustainable urban development and agricultural practices, reflecting a holistic approach to environmental management. “Harit Mahacity Compost validates the quality of our processed compost and demonstrates the city’s commitment to scientific waste management, climate-friendly urban planning, and sustainable growth,” the official said. Industry observers point out that certified urban compost branding can create market confidence among farmers, incentivise higher-quality waste segregation, and encourage responsible consumption patterns. By integrating certification with local agriculture, Navi Mumbai is setting an example for eco-conscious urban planning while reducing reliance on chemical inputs.

The municipal corporation’s move aligns with broader national and state-level strategies aimed at promoting zero-waste cities and sustainable urban ecosystems. By making high-quality organic manure commercially accessible, the city strengthens both its environmental credentials and its agricultural support infrastructure. With Harit Mahacity Compost, Navi Mumbai not only addresses municipal waste challenges but also contributes meaningfully to sustainable agriculture and climate-sensitive urban development. Officials indicate that the programme will continue to expand, supporting long-term goals of ecological balance, inclusive urban growth, and responsible resource management.
