Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai reached a historic milestone on 21 November 2025, managing 1,036 air traffic movements (ATMs) in a single day, surpassing its previous record of 1,032 ATMs set in November 2023. This achievement underscores the airport’s growing operational capacity and strategic role as one of India’s busiest aviation hubs.
A total of 1,70,488 passengers travelled through the airport on the day, comprising 1,21,527 domestic and 48,961 international travellers, nearly matching the airport’s previous passenger record of 1,70,516 in January 2025. The flights included 755 domestic and 281 international operations, reflecting CSMIA’s seamless handling of arrivals and departures across multiple routes. Domestic traffic was concentrated on high-demand corridors including Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata, while international operations saw high volumes on routes to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, London Heathrow, Doha, and Jeddah. An official highlighted that the operational feat was enabled by coordinated ground management, upgraded Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) systems, and enhancements in passenger processing infrastructure. “These measures ensure efficient handling of both passengers and aircraft even during peak operational days,” the official said.
Recent investments in digital facilitation, such as self-baggage drop units, self-check-in kiosks, and DigiYatra-enabled gates, have reduced processing time and enhanced passenger convenience. Industry experts note that CSMIA’s emphasis on technology and sustainability, including energy-efficient systems and optimised flight scheduling, has contributed significantly to this operational efficiency. The record also demonstrates Mumbai’s resilience in maintaining high operational standards while balancing domestic and international demands. Airport authorities confirmed that continuous monitoring and infrastructure upgrades are central to managing future growth, especially in the lead-up to peak winter travel seasons.
Looking ahead, officials emphasised that maintaining performance while adopting sustainable practices is a key priority. The airport continues to integrate eco-friendly initiatives such as LED-based lighting, water recycling, and optimised taxiway management to minimise carbon emissions while ensuring passenger comfort. This milestone cements Mumbai’s position as a global aviation hub, demonstrating that the city’s airport can efficiently handle high volumes without compromising service quality. With continued expansion and operational enhancements, CSMIA is expected to further strengthen connectivity, passenger experience, and India’s international aviation profile.
