Mumbai’s primary international airport has completed its annual post-monsoon runway overhaul, closing both airstrips for six hours this week to carry out essential inspections and surface restoration ahead of the peak travel season. The maintenance programme, carried out after months of heavy rain and continuous aircraft movement, is considered critical to safeguarding operational continuity at one of the country’s busiest aviation hubs.
Airport authorities said the closure allowed technical teams to undertake a comprehensive review of the condition of the two runways, including structural checks, surface repairs, lighting system tests, and repainting of vital safety markings. Routine post-monsoon work is mandated for airports located in high-rainfall regions as saturated pavements, friction loss, and weather-induced wear can elevate safety risks if not addressed promptly. According to a senior airport official, the six-hour shutdown was planned to minimise passenger disruption while ensuring all systems supporting aircraft movement were restored to peak performance. “The post-monsoon review helps us assess surface health, replace markings that fade due to prolonged weather exposure, and validate the performance of ground lighting systems. These checks keep the airport resilient through the busiest months,” the official said.
The works involved rubber removal to restore runway friction levels, detailed surface inspection to identify micro-cracks, repainting of touchdown zones and intersection markings, and testing of more than 5,000 aeronautical ground lights. Technical teams also cleaned cable ducts and utility chambers, which often accumulate debris during the monsoon. Industry specialists note that such maintenance is central to long-term airfield sustainability, as routine upgrading reduces the frequency of emergency closures and prolongs the lifespan of critical assets.
