Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has taken a decisive step to improve healthcare access by launching three mobile health clinics across the city. The initiative, unveiled at the municipal headquarters, is a joint effort between the Public Health Department, Piramal Swasth, and Landmark Cares, aimed at delivering free medical services, particularly to residents in slum and underserved areas.
Each mobile unit is staffed with a qualified doctor, nurse, pharmacist, health educator, and driver, ensuring comprehensive coverage of primary healthcare needs. Operating from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the units will visit different wards on a rotational basis, providing on-the-spot medical consultations, routine tests such as hemoglobin and blood sugar levels, and essential treatments for common ailments including hypertension, diabetes, fever, cough, and gastrointestinal issues. In addition to clinical care, the mobile clinics are equipped to distribute reading glasses for residents with near-vision difficulties and conduct educational sessions on disease prevention and healthy lifestyle practices. “Our goal is not just to treat illnesses but to empower communities with knowledge on managing non-communicable diseases and maintaining long-term health,” an official from the Public Health Department explained.
The introduction of mobile clinics addresses persistent healthcare gaps in densely populated and economically disadvantaged zones. Experts emphasise that decentralised healthcare delivery can significantly reduce patient travel time, ease the burden on static hospitals, and increase early detection of chronic conditions. Community health practitioners also note that mobile units strengthen the civic infrastructure by embedding preventive care into neighbourhoods, contributing to a more resilient, sustainable urban health ecosystem. Residents and local leaders have welcomed the initiative, highlighting the potential to improve overall public health outcomes while fostering equitable access to medical services. A senior municipal official observed, “Mobile clinics are a practical solution for inclusive urban healthcare. By bringing services directly to communities, we aim to ensure no resident is left behind.”
TMC plans to monitor the performance of these units closely, adjusting routes and services based on ward-specific health data and community feedback. The program represents a significant move toward a citizen-focused, sustainable healthcare model that aligns with Thane’s broader urban wellness objectives.
