MSRTC To Launch 250 Multi Fuel Retail Outlets Across Maharashtra Statewide

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is preparing to set up over 250 multi-fuel retail outlets across the state in a major diversification move aimed at boosting its non-fare revenue and strengthening its financial stability. The initiative marks one of the largest infrastructure-driven revenue generation plans by the public transport utility in recent years.

According to senior officials, the multi-fuel outlets will come up on MSRTC-owned land parcels located along major state and national highways. Each site, spread over roughly 1,200 square metres, has been strategically selected based on vehicle density, accessibility, and proximity to key routes. The retail outlets will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model to ensure investment efficiency and operational expertise from established players in the fuel sector. The project, currently in the tendering phase, aims to transform MSRTC-owned spaces into integrated “Petro-Motel Hubs” that combine fuel retailing with facilities such as convenience stores, rest areas, and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The inclusion of EV infrastructure aligns with Maharashtra’s broader push towards sustainable mobility and carbon reduction in the transport sector.

Officials said MSRTC already operates over 250 in-house fuel stations catering to its fleet of buses, giving it a strong base of operational experience. “The corporation’s long-standing relationship with major oil companies such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum provides a solid foundation for expanding into public retail,” an official said. The proposed multi-fuel stations will dispense petrol, diesel, and compressed natural gas (CNG), along with high-speed chargers for electric vehicles. This multi-energy model is designed to support the evolving needs of both traditional and new-age motorists while encouraging adoption of cleaner transport modes.

Transport experts have welcomed the move, saying it reflects a pragmatic shift in MSRTC’s business strategy at a time when the corporation is under financial strain due to rising operational costs and declining passenger revenues. “Public transport bodies across India are realising that diversifying into energy retail and allied services can create stable, long-term revenue streams,” a mobility analyst noted. The initiative also carries potential urban and environmental benefits. By developing well-managed fuel and EV hubs along key corridors, MSRTC can reduce unregulated roadside refuelling, improve safety standards, and promote the transition towards electric mobility.

Once the pilot phase is completed, MSRTC plans to scale up the model across all districts, offering citizens a reliable, state-backed network of fuel and EV services while contributing to Maharashtra’s sustainable transport goals.
