Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has unveiled a comprehensive technology-driven reform plan designed to fast-track housing approvals, improve transparency, and strengthen accountability in one of the city’s most complex urban challenges.
With over half of Mumbai’s population living in slums or informal settlements, the success of these reforms holds significance not only for urban planning but also for advancing equitable and sustainable housing across India’s financial capital. Representatives from leading developer organisations praised the authority’s use of digital data integration — linking Aadhaar, electricity bills, and voter rolls to streamline eligibility verification — as a “game-changer” that could reduce administrative timelines from months to days. Developers also cited the introduction of time-bound eviction and demolition procedures as a signal of renewed policy commitment. The authority’s adoption of blockchain to secure file approvals and chatbot-assisted grievance redressal has further underscored its focus on accountability and citizen engagement.
