Gujarat Freight Train Delivers 1350 Tonnes Industrial Salt To Anantnag

In a significant development for trade and logistics in south Kashmir, the first freight train carrying industrial salt from Gujarat successfully reached the Anantnag goods shed on Friday. The 21-wagon consignment, totaling 1,350 tonnes, marks a milestone in freight transportation for the Jammu division of Northern Railway.

This industrial salt, primarily used in tanning, pulp, soap, and brick kiln industries, is expected to ensure a steady supply of essential raw materials to the Valley. Northern Railway officials highlighted that the new rail link will significantly reduce reliance on road transport, which is often disrupted during adverse weather conditions, and lower logistics costs while ensuring timely deliveries.

The freight movement comes amid a surge in trade activity in the region. Recent months have seen increased transport of agricultural produce such as apples to Delhi, alongside the movement of commercial goods including Maruti vehicles, signalling the region’s growing integration into national logistics networks.Officials emphasised that the introduction of industrial salt through rail freight strengthens trade connectivity between Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir, and paves the way for more bulk shipments of essential commodities. “The arrival of this consignment is a significant step towards modernising freight transport in the Valley, enhancing supply chain efficiency, and supporting local industries,” stated a senior Northern Railway official.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to expand sustainable and eco-friendly transportation infrastructure across India. Rail transport offers a lower carbon footprint compared to road haulage, contributing to climate-resilient logistics while easing pressure on congested road networks in the Union Territory.Experts anticipate that this development will encourage more industries in the region to source raw materials via rail, optimising cost and time efficiencies. It also underscores Indian Railways’ role in facilitating trade and industrial growth in geographically sensitive areas while maintaining uninterrupted supply chains during climatic and logistical challengesAs the Valley continues to modernise its freight network, Northern Railway officials confirmed that regular industrial consignments are expected to follow, further strengthening the region’s economic integration and enhancing industrial productivity. With such initiatives, Anantnag’s logistical landscape is poised for transformation, ensuring sustainable, reliable, and efficient supply of industrial commodities across the Union Territory.
