Bengaluru Metro Blue Line Adds Luggage Racks For Airport Commuters
Bengaluru Metro’s upcoming Blue Line is set to enhance passenger convenience by introducing dedicated luggage racks in all coaches, a move aimed at improving airport commutes. The Blue Line, currently under construction, will provide a vital link between Central Silk Board and Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) via KR Puram, strengthening the city’s public transport network.
Officials from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) confirmed that each metro coach on this corridor will include specially designed racks at both ends, replacing two regular seats per coach. The racks are intended to securely accommodate larger suitcases, offering travellers an easier journey with reduced baggage restrictions. This addition is particularly significant for airport-bound passengers who often face limitations on bag size and quantity under current metro regulations.
The 58.19-kilometre Blue Line represents one of Bengaluru’s largest infrastructure projects within the Namma Metro expansion plan. Split into two phases, Phase 2A covers 19.75 km from Central Silk Board to KR Puram, while Phase 2B extends 38.44 km from KR Puram to KIA. As of mid-2025, over half the construction has been completed, with full operationalisation projected for December 2027.Alongside luggage facilities, the Blue Line will feature driverless trains equipped with advanced safety technology. These upgrades aim to optimise commuter experience and operational efficiency, reflecting BMRCL’s commitment to modern, sustainable urban mobility solutions. Experts note that providing dedicated luggage storage aligns with the broader objective of creating a passenger-friendly and accessible transit system.
Current metro regulations allow only one bag of limited size per passenger, with additional baggage attracting fees and fines.
