Mumbai’s ambitious circular special train, designed to ease pressure on the city’s most congested railway stretch, has been cancelled after technical issues in the reservation system. The service, which was scheduled to run this weekend and on select dates in October, was meant to provide relief to thousands of passengers travelling between Pune, Panvel, and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region without burdening the already stretched CSMT–Kalyan corridor.
According to railway officials, the cancellation stems solely from glitches in the Passenger Reservation System (PRS). They emphasised that there are no operational shortcomings in the plan and assured that the train will resume once the system stabilises. For now, commuters have been advised to depend on regular express and suburban trains, which continue to face mounting demand. The concept of the circular train was viewed as a strategic intervention to balance passenger flows while improving punctuality across the suburban network. Traditionally, all long-distance trains towards Mumbai pass through the saturated CSMT–Kalyan stretch, often delaying both suburban and outstation services. By re-routing the special train through Panvel and Kalyan, without halts at CSMT, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, or Dadar, the railway hoped to ease congestion while providing a viable alternative for passengers travelling between Pune and Mumbai’s expanding suburban belt.
Experts noted that while the immediate disruption is a setback, the idea behind the circular service holds strong relevance in the context of Mumbai’s mobility future. With the city working towards sustainable urban transport and reduced carbon emissions, diversionary routes that prioritise efficiency could complement metro expansions, electric bus fleets, and last-mile connectivity improvements. A senior transport planner observed that such measures not only decongest existing choke points but also align with broader climate goals by encouraging rail travel over private vehicles. The affected service, Train No. 05037, had been scheduled to operate on September 27 and subsequently on October 4, 11, and 18. Officials have expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and stated that updates on the resumption of services will be communicated through official railway channels. For the city’s vast commuter base, particularly those travelling between Pune and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the expectation now rests on a swift resolution to the technical challenges.
As Mumbai continues to wrestle with urban mobility constraints, the cancellation underscores the urgent need for resilient systems, upgraded digital infrastructure, and a more integrated transport vision. While the glitch is temporary, it serves as a reminder that both operational planning and technological readiness are critical to sustaining commuter confidence in India’s busiest railway ecosystem.
