Delhi Identifies 18 New Bus Routes To Ease Trans Yamuna Congestion

Residents of East Delhi’s Trans-Yamuna region may soon find their commutes easier, as the government has drawn up 18 new bus routes designed to reduce congestion and improve last-mile connectivity. The move, developed with technical support from IIT Delhi, is part of a wider strategy to upgrade the city’s public transport system in line with sustainable and low-emission mobility goals.

Delhi identifies 18 new bus routes to ease Trans Yamuna congestion Officials said the rationalisation of routes would directly link unserved neighbourhoods with metro stations and employment hubs. The new network will cover more than 1,000 bus stops and aims to replace the reliance on shared autos and informal modes of travel that dominate the area. For commuters in dense localities such as Mandoli, Tahirpur, Karawal Nagar, and Mayur Vihar, the plan promises faster, cheaper, and more reliable access to the metro.

The new services will be rolled out from three depots  East Vinod Nagar, Shastri Park, and Ghazipur. From East Vinod Nagar alone, 11 routes are being planned, including links to Patparganj Industrial Area, Akshardham Metro, and Mansarovar Park Metro. Shastri Park will see four routes connecting Seelampur, Shiv Vihar, and Sabhapur, while Ghazipur Depot will handle three routes to Mayur Vihar and Harsh Vihar.Transport officials described the initiative as part of a broader roadmap to create “green, affordable, and equitable” public mobility. Alongside the rationalisation, Delhi is adding 3,800 electric buses to its fleet, making it one of the largest adopters of zero-emission buses in the country. Nearly 40 lakh daily bus commuters are expected to benefit from this combined expansion of services and cleaner technology.

Experts argue that the Trans-Yamuna region has historically lagged in bus connectivity compared with the rest of the capital. Inadequate links to the metro have led to overcrowding on major roads and forced people into costly and polluting travel options. The current revamp is being seen as a corrective step to rebalance the mobility equation, reduce traffic jams, and bring down vehicular emissions. While authorities have assured residents that the rollout will be phased to avoid disruptions, they have also hinted at complementary road improvements, including upgrades on the Outer Ring Road. This, they say, will provide system-wide relief from congestion and help embed the principle of sustainable transport in Delhi’s urban growth. For commuters, the initiative represents more than just new bus routes   it signals a shift towards building a public transport system that is reliable, eco-friendly, and inclusive, aligning with the vision of a cleaner and more liveable city.
