Navi Mumbai To Thane Expressway Approved For Rs 6363 Crore

Thane has been green lit for a game changing, sustainable infrastructure push as Maharashtra’s cabinet has sanctioned a ₹6,363 crore design for an elevated, six lane corridor linking the city directly to the forthcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The elevated structure, delivering seamless connectivity, is expected to reduce current 90 minute journeys to just 30 minutes, marking a leap forward in both transport efficiency and equitable, eco friendly urban access.Designed and rubber stamped as a strategic PPP initiative under the authority of CIDCO, this high speed green corridor will support vehicles cruising at up to 100 km/h and benefit communities across the Eastern Express Highway, Thane Belapur, and adjacent catchment areas such as Kalyan, Dombivli, and Bhayandar.

The corridor includes six interchanges and leverages government land at nominal lease rates to promote cost effective, sustainable delivery Environmental responsibility underpins the design. CIDCO has six months to secure environmental and regulatory clearances, mindful of mangrove zones and coastal regulation areas along portions of the route. This phase carries both financial and ecological weight, as careful planning is essential to preserve green buffers while enabling metropolitan progress.

Commuters will bear a one way toll of ₹365 higher than the existing Atal Setu sea bridge toll but officials signal an upward adjustment in sync with inflation and maintenance demands. Despite cost concerns, the time savings and reduced congestion underscore the project’s potential to catalyse economic uplift for the broader region. The elevated corridor complements other major infrastructure harvests like Metro Line 11, AC commuter trains, and regional expansions, reinforcing Thane and its environs as sustainable, well connected urban nodes

For all its promise, the project’s success hinges on meaningful environmental permits, fair land compensation, and transparent toll policy that ensure inclusivity. In forging this green city artery, authorities have an opportunity to model resilient, equitable urban planning. The final outcome will determine if this elevated corridor ushers in a new era of sustainable, human centred connectivity or becomes yet another toll laden ambition.
