The long-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport is now poised for inauguration on September 30, ending years of delays that have repeatedly pushed the operational timeline. Officials confirm that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has issued the latest notice extending the runway closure only until September 20, signalling readiness for the month-end launch. Domestic flight operations are expected to begin around late October or early November, initially with a limited schedule, as infrastructure and operational systems are finalised.
For over a decade, the airport has seen multiple postponements, with three deadlines missed in the last twelve months alone. AAI has periodically updated pilots and airlines through NOTAMs (Notice to Airmen), keeping them informed about the runway’s non-operational status. Since May, these notices have gradually shortened the closure period. The latest NOTAM confirms that flight operations cannot resume on the runway until 11.59 pm on September 20, reflecting steady progress towards commissioning. Aviation experts note that such transparency is critical for safety and operational preparedness, ensuring pilots are aware of runway availability in emergencies or diversion scenarios. Preparations for the inauguration are underway, with officials coordinating logistics to receive dignitaries and mark the operational launch. The airport, developed by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, has been designed to support high-capacity passenger traffic while emphasising sustainable and eco-friendly infrastructure, aligning with the city’s goals for low-carbon urban transport. Once fully operational, NMIA is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity, reduce pressure on Mumbai’s existing airport, and support climate-conscious aviation planning through modern, energy-efficient facilities.
