Pune Purandar Airport Project Set to Transform Regional Connectivity and Growth

Pune is poised for a major infrastructural leap with the proposed Purandar airport project, expected to enhance regional connectivity and spur economic growth across Pune and neighbouring districts. Officials emphasise that the new airport will not only cater to Pune’s aviation needs but also provide international flight access to residents of Solapur, Satara, and Ahilyanagar, positioning the city as a key aviation and industrial hub in western India.

The project, currently under government review, has drawn parallels with ongoing developments at Panvel in Navi Mumbai, highlighting the transformative potential of a dedicated airport. Experts note that the initiative could bring new educational institutions, boost industrial activity, and catalyse economic diversification in Pune district and surrounding areas. The state government has scaled down the land acquisition requirement from 2,382 hectares to roughly 1,285 hectares to address opposition from local farmers, yet concerns persist. Villagers from affected areas—including Pargaon Memane, Ekhatpur, Kumbharvalan, Vanpuri, Khanwadi, Munjawadi, and Udachiwadi—have actively opposed the project, citing potential loss of farmland, disruption to livelihoods, and rights violations linked to land acquisition without consent. Local gram sabhas have formally passed resolutions rejecting the project, and these are under consideration by tehsildars, district administration, and relevant government bodies.

Officials assert that prior infrastructural projects in Pune, including the MIDCs in Chakan and Ranjangaon, dams across the district, and the Hinjewadi IT Park, were realised through careful land acquisition, bringing long-term socio-economic benefits. Authorities stress that the Purandar airport could similarly transform agricultural practices, industrial opportunities, and regional mobility. Connectivity remains a critical factor, as the existing Pune airport operates from defence land at Lohegaon, limiting expansion due to Indian Air Force restrictions. A dedicated airport at Purandar is seen as the only viable solution to meet rising passenger demand, accommodate international flights, and decongest the city’s current aviation infrastructure. Experts highlight that improved air connectivity would encourage sustainable urban growth, reduce carbon emissions by shortening travel distances, and support equitable access for both urban and peri-urban populations.

While officials continue dialogue with affected communities, assurances have been made regarding fair compensation and safeguarding local interests. The state government remains committed to expediting necessary approvals, with high-level reviews ensuring that the project aligns with broader developmental and environmental goals. The Purandar airport represents a pivotal opportunity to bolster Pune’s strategic importance, enhance regional industrial and educational ecosystems, and create a forward-looking aviation infrastructure model. However, balancing developmental ambitions with equitable land acquisition and community engagement will be crucial to its successful implementation.
