Mumbai To Develop 130 Acre Coastal Road Garden Worth Rs 400 Crore

Mumbai is set to gain a massive 130-acre urban garden along its coastal road corridor, a project valued at nearly Rs 400 crore and projected as the city’s newest “green lung.” Designed as an expansive public space, the development will integrate landscaped gardens, cycling tracks, walking trails and plazas, with the aim of restoring environmental balance in one of India’s most congested metropolises.

The project, being executed under a long-term corporate social responsibility commitment, comes after civic authorities had earmarked a portion of the 111 hectares of reclaimed land along the coastal road for ecological and recreational use. Of this, 70 hectares have been dedicated to landscaped gardens, open spaces and an amphitheatre, while the latest phase adds a significant 53 hectares to the city’s green cover.

Officials connected with the initiative said the garden will be developed and maintained for 30 years, reflecting a model of public–private partnership aimed at long-term sustainability. They described it as a unique integration of urban infrastructure with eco-friendly landscaping, a vision aligned with global trends of creating carbon-neutral, people-centric cities. The location, stretching between Breach Candy and Worli, is expected to transform into a landmark destination. Civic experts note that the “ribbon of green” hugging the city’s edge will not only serve as a recreational retreat but also act as a buffer against pollution. With walkways, flowering zones and a continuous promenade overlooking the sea, planners say it will stand as a symbol of balance between development and ecological preservation. In addition to the sprawling gardens, the broader coastal road project has already delivered a 7.5-kilometre promenade inaugurated on Independence Day. Median beautification is being handled separately by other private firms, showcasing how multiple stakeholders are contributing to an integrated urban renewal effort.

Urban planners have stressed that while such large-scale projects are welcome, their true success will depend on long-term maintenance and public access. “This initiative must remain inclusive, free from commercial overreach, and rooted in sustainability. Only then will it become a genuine legacy for the city,” said an environmental policy expert. The green development is being positioned not merely as a landscaped park, but as a health-promoting, climate-resilient gift to Mumbai. Officials emphasised that this is a deeply personal project for the city, reflecting both civic responsibility and corporate accountability. By enhancing air quality, promoting outdoor activities, and offering a much-needed escape into nature, the project is expected to reshape how citizens interact with their coastline. If executed as promised, Mumbai’s coastal road garden will stand as a legacy project a reminder that even amidst rapid urbanisation, sustainable and equitable green spaces can redefine the future of Indian cities.
