Gujarat To Launch 5477 Crore Urban Development Projects

Ahmedabad is preparing for a major transformation with urban and transport projects worth ₹5,477 crore set to be launched during a two-day visit beginning 25 August. The initiatives aim to expand eco-friendly housing, strengthen public transport, and advance sustainable infrastructure across Gujarat.

At the centre of the programme is the inauguration of nearly 1,449 affordable homes and 130 commercial shops under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban). The development has been undertaken with a budget of ₹133.42 crore and is designed as an in-situ slum redevelopment project in one of the city’s most densely populated areas. Urban planners describe the initiative as an important step towards equitable housing and slum-free cities.

Transport is another critical focus. The foundation stone will be laid for upgrading Ahmedabad’s SP Ring Road into a six-lane expressway under a hybrid annuity model. Officials highlighted that controlled access will not only cut congestion but also enhance commuter safety by aligning with expressway standards. Water supply projects will also take shape with the inauguration of a new pumping station in Daskroi taluka, built at a cost of ₹27 crore. A 23-km trunk pipeline connected to the facility is expected to supply clean drinking water to ten villages under the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority. Experts believe such initiatives align closely with the Jal Jeevan Mission and the state’s long-term commitment to sustainable water security.

The programme will also see foundation stones for stormwater drainage in key urban pockets, redevelopment of a railway overbridge between Sabarmati and Ahmedabad, and new water distribution stations in Thaltej, Naranpura and Chandkheda. In parallel, local authorities plan to develop public precincts, including Law Garden, with modern urban furniture to promote inclusivity in public spaces. In Gandhinagar, projects worth ₹281 crore will be unveiled, including sewage pumping stations, stormwater management, and new road connectivity to support the expanding metro corridor. The broader plan also extends to Mehsana district, where ₹1,796 crore will be invested in railway projects. These include the doubling of the Mehsana–Palanpur line and gauge conversions across multiple routes, which will reduce travel time and improve freight efficiency.

A highlight of the visit will be the launch of Maruti Suzuki’s first electric vehicle production line at Hansalpur. Industry experts say the move underscores Gujarat’s role as a hub for India’s clean mobility transition, with the e-Vitara expected to set new benchmarks in the domestic EV market. The projects taken together demonstrate a strong emphasis on integrating sustainability with economic growth. Affordable housing, improved transport corridors, enhanced water systems, and clean mobility underline the direction towards greener and more inclusive cities. Analysts suggest that the developments will not only strengthen Gujarat’s urban resilience but also set an example for other states to follow in their pursuit of eco-friendly infrastructure.’
