Uttar Pradesh Prioritises Local Manufacturing For E-Bus Expansion

Uttar Pradesh is stepping up its focus on electric mobility with a clear push for locally manufactured e-buses. The state government has directed officials to prioritise vehicles produced within Uttar Pradesh, signalling a commitment to boost the local manufacturing ecosystem, generate employment, and strengthen the state’s contribution to the national electric vehicle push.

During a review of the transport department and UPSRTC operations, officials were instructed to maintain passenger safety, convenience, and revenue growth as central priorities. The state is accelerating the construction of modern bus stations, promoting electric mobility, and ensuring strict adherence to road safety norms, including the “No Helmet–No Fuel” rule.

Officials reported that 23 bus stations are currently being developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, with 54 more planned in the second phase and 50 under active construction. Complementing this infrastructure, eight new EV depots are being set up with universal high-capacity chargers to support the e-bus fleet. Authorities were asked to identify new routes and encourage private participation to enhance operational efficiency and commuter experience.

Highlighting recent achievements, officials noted that over 78 lakh passengers benefitted from free travel on Raksha Bandhan. The transport sector has also seen significant growth in vehicle registration, with 37.9 lakh new vehicles registered in 2024-25, and over 11 lakh added by June this fiscal. To further incentivise electric mobility, the government has granted tax and fee exemptions valued at ₹942 crore, promoting sustainable transportation while supporting the state’s green energy goals. The government is also strengthening coordination with law enforcement agencies and leveraging modern technology to reduce road accidents. Officials emphasised that adopting advanced monitoring systems and stricter enforcement of traffic rules will improve overall commuter safety while supporting the state’s ambitious e-mobility agenda.

Experts highlighted that prioritising locally manufactured e-buses not only aligns with the “Make in India” initiative but also contributes to sustainable urban mobility, reduced carbon emissions, and equitable access to modern public transport. With dedicated infrastructure and targeted incentives, Uttar Pradesh aims to emerge as a model state for electric transport adoption in India. The strategic push for e-buses complements broader environmental objectives, including lowering urban air pollution and fostering gender-neutral, safe, and sustainable public transport options. As infrastructure and regulatory measures progress, the state is expected to see increased adoption of electric fleets, improved commuter satisfaction, and strengthened economic activity in the transport sector.
