New FASTag Annual Pass Crosses 5 Lakh Users In 4 Days

The newly introduced FASTag annual pass has seen overwhelming adoption, with more than five lakh users registering within just four days of its nationwide launch. The scheme, designed to ease highway travel and improve toll efficiency, is fast emerging as one of the most popular digital mobility solutions in recent years.

Rolled out on 15 August, the annual pass allows private vehicle owners to pay a flat fee of ₹3,000 for one year or up to 200 toll plaza crossings. The pass is valid across 1,150 toll booths covering the country’s national highways and expressways. Activation can be completed within two hours through the Rajmargyatra app or the National Highways Authority of India’s online portal, a feature officials say has been crucial to its fast uptake.

Data released by highway authorities show that the strongest response has come from southern states, led by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Toll plazas in these regions recorded the highest number of transactions in the initial days, reflecting the density of long-distance commuters and the popularity of private vehicle travel. On the opening day alone, more than 1.2 lakh users purchased and activated the annual pass. Officials highlight that the new pass addresses one of the biggest pain points for regular highway travellers — the need for frequent recharges. By offering a prepaid, long-term solution, the pass reduces delays at toll gates, improves commuter convenience, and strengthens the digital payment ecosystem.

FASTag technology, based on radio frequency identification, already covers 98 per cent of India’s toll transactions and has over 8 crore users nationwide. Since its introduction, it has reduced congestion, cut vehicle idling times, and contributed to lower emissions from highway traffic. Experts believe the annual pass builds on this foundation by offering predictability and cost-efficiency, particularly for families and professionals who travel frequently by road. While hailed as a major step towards smart mobility, transport analysts point out that the scheme’s real success will depend on sustained adoption and user experience over the year. With highway traffic steadily rising, smoother toll collection is expected to reduce bottlenecks, translating into fuel savings and reduced carbon output — benefits that directly align with India’s broader climate commitments.

The annual pass is currently available only for non-commercial vehicles, keeping the focus on private mobility. Officials suggest that future iterations may expand to other categories once operational stability is achieved. For millions of road users, the FASTag annual pass represents more than just a financial saving. It is an example of how digital solutions can create more equitable, eco-friendly and efficient transport systems, bridging the gap between policy reform and everyday convenience.
