Kolkata Metro Airport Link To Start Next Week With Four Stations

Kolkata’s urban mobility landscape is set to transform next week with the launch of the Yellow Line metro service connecting the city’s airport. The 6.77-kilometre stretch between Noapara and Jai Hind Bimanbandar will include four strategically placed stations — Noapara, Dum Dum Cantonment, Jessore Road, and the underground Jai Hind Bimanbandar station — offering residents faster and more reliable access to the airport.

Metro Railway Kolkata officials announced that this extension, scheduled for inauguration on August 22, will significantly reduce travel time and congestion for commuters in Baranagar, Tobin Road, Sinthee, Dum Dum, Nagerbazar, and Kaikhali More areas. With the integration of Noapara as an interchange for the Blue Line towards Kavi Subhash and proximity to the Sealdah-Bongaon Eastern Railway section at Dum Dum Cantonment, passengers will enjoy seamless connectivity across Kolkata’s metro network. Constructed at an approximate cost of ₹1,866 crore, the project features state-of-the-art passenger amenities across newly built stations, including ticket counters, elevators, and comfortable seating areas. Jessore Road station is built at surface level, while Noapara and Dum Dum Cantonment are elevated on viaducts, and the Jai Hind Bimanbandar station is fully underground. Metro officials emphasised that these infrastructure enhancements align with the city’s broader vision of sustainable and eco-friendly urban transport.

Experts in urban planning note that integrating airport connectivity within the metro network provides multiple environmental and social benefits. Encouraging mass transit use reduces dependence on private vehicles, cutting carbon emissions, traffic congestion, and urban air pollution. The project also supports equitable mobility, offering accessible transit options for all commuters, including women, senior citizens, and differently-abled passengers. Officials highlighted that the new Yellow Line extension is designed to meet rising commuter demand efficiently, particularly during peak hours and festive travel periods. The network’s interconnectivity ensures that travellers from suburban areas can reach central business districts and the airport without relying on private transport.

With Kolkata Metro expanding its network to incorporate major transit hubs like the airport, city authorities are reinforcing the importance of reliable, zero-carbon public transport. The launch of the Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar stretch is expected to serve as a model for future urban mobility projects, combining commuter convenience, environmental responsibility, and operational efficiency.
