Mumbai faces heavy rains; waterlogging in Mahim, Thane, Sion, traffic jams, high tide

Mumbai Heavy rains lashed the city on Saturday, bringing severe waterlogging to Mahim, Thane, and Sion, along with several other vulnerable low-lying areas. The downpour led to traffic slowing to a crawl on major roads, local trains facing minor delays, and the high tide worsening flooding conditions. Commuters and residents were left struggling to move through submerged streets, clogged junctions, and long travel disruptions.

The rainfall, which began late Friday night, intensified by Saturday morning, catching many office-goers and weekend travelers off guard. Several arterial routes, including the Eastern Express Highway, Western Express Highway, and stretches of the Link Road, reported slow-moving traffic as vehicles moved cautiously through waterlogged sections. Long traffic jams were seen in parts of Dadar, Kurla, BKC, and Andheri, where potholes hidden under water added to motorists’ troubles. In Mahim, residents reported waist-deep water in bylanes, while in Sion, flooding near the railway station created major challenges for pedestrians. Thane saw several areas, including Kalwa and Mumbra, submerged, leading to diversion of traffic and cancellation of some local bus services. Videos circulated on social media showed vehicles stuck on flooded stretches, with motorists pushing two-wheelers through stagnant water.

Rail commuters, though spared from major disruption, still faced 10–15 minute delays on both Western and Central Railway lines. Minor waterlogging on tracks near Sion and Kurla affected the smooth movement of trains during the morning peak hours. Railway officials stated that water pumps had been deployed in vulnerable stretches to ensure tracks remained operational, and monitoring teams were on high alert. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that several pumping stations across the city were working at full capacity to drain water, but continuous rainfall and the morning high tide slowed down the process. Disaster management teams were deployed in flooded zones to assist stranded vehicles and ensure emergency response.

Weather officials have issued a yellow alert for the city, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas over the next 24 hours. Citizens have been advised to avoid non-essential travel, particularly during high tide hours, when waterlogging risk remains severe. Daily life came to a halt for many households as ground-floor homes in Mahim and Sion reported water seeping inside, while shopkeepers in Thane’s busy market areas struggled to keep stock dry. For commuters, the rains meant longer-than-usual travel times, missed appointments, and in some cases, cancelled plans.

While Mumbai is no stranger to monsoon flooding, the weekend rains were yet another reminder of the city’s struggle with drainage, infrastructure pressure, and high-density living. Officials assured that contingency measures were in place, but residents remained frustrated at the recurring disruption each monsoon season.
