The long-awaited Mumbai Metro-4 corridor, connecting Wadala to Kasarvadavali in Thane, is set to take a significant step forward, with trial runs scheduled to begin in September this year. Officials have confirmed that preparations for the trials are in their final stages, signalling a crucial milestone for the 32-km elevated corridor aimed at easing road congestion between Mumbai and Thane.
The project, which features 32 stations along its stretch, has faced multiple delays due to land acquisition hurdles, utility shifting, and pandemic-related disruptions. However, authorities have expressed confidence that civil work on major sections will be completed in time for the scheduled trials, allowing system integration and safety checks to commence before year-end.
Parallel to the Metro-4 progress, the Mumbai Coastal Road Project is also moving forward, promising a more integrated transport network for the city. The coastal route, once operational, is expected to connect seamlessly with other arterial roads and public transport systems, further reducing travel time for commuters travelling between south Mumbai, the eastern suburbs, and Thane.
Urban transport planners note that the combination of Metro-4 and the Coastal Road will significantly improve east-west connectivity and reduce the dependence on private vehicles. This, in turn, is likely to ease traffic pressure on the Eastern Express Highway and other key corridors, especially during peak hours.
Residents in Thane and adjoining areas have welcomed the news, anticipating faster, more reliable daily commutes. While final commissioning will depend on the successful completion of safety trials and statutory approvals, the upcoming September trials mark a visible step towards transforming Mumbai’s public transport landscape.
