The government of Uttar Pradesh is aggressively pursuing its vision for an integrated, multi-modal transport network, with the proposed Meerut airport emerging as a cornerstone of this regional strategy. The project, which aims to boost connectivity and stimulate economic growth in Western Uttar Pradesh, has reached a critical juncture. While land for the first-phase runway has been officially secured, the broader development is being held back by a series of complex land acquisition challenges. The Meerut Development Authority (MDA) has successfully registered approximately 46 acres of land under the Civil Aviation department, marking a significant milestone that allows for the construction of a runway capable of accommodating 72-seater aircraft. This initial development is a key part of the government’s plan to integrate smaller cities into the national air travel grid under regional connectivity schemes. However, the initial progress is only a fraction of the overall plan. According to aviation officials, an additional 96 acres are critically needed for the construction of essential airport facilities and the main terminal building. The administration has secured 75 acres of this additional requirement and is currently in complex negotiations with local farmers for the remaining 21 acres, a dispute that is pending in court.
The project’s long-term viability extends well beyond the first phase. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has outlined a multi-phased expansion, requiring a substantial 300 acres for the second phase and another 200 acres for the third. Officials have confirmed that a major portion of this land, particularly for the second phase, is currently owned by farmers. This presents a formidable challenge, necessitating a carefully managed and equitable land acquisition process.
