MRVC Unveils Deck Connecting Footbridges At Nalasopara Station

Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has inaugurated a new elevated deck at Nalasopara station, designed to streamline movement at one of the suburban network’s busiest nodes. Spanning 95 metres in length and 11.5 metres in width, the new deck connects two foot overbridges (FOBs) on the southern side of Platform Number One.

This upgrade is a critical piece of the broader Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3A, a central government-supported redevelopment initiative aimed at enhancing capacity, safety, and accessibility across Mumbai’s overstretched suburban rail system. With over 183,000 passengers boarding more than 440 suburban trains daily at Nalasopara, the newly launched structure is expected to alleviate dangerous overcrowding, especially during peak hours. The station has long been identified as a pressure point in Mumbai’s public transport grid, often witnessing chaotic foot traffic that slows down movement and endangers vulnerable passengers, including the elderly and children.

The new deck is part of a phased approach to revamp Nalasopara station. Future additions include another elevated deck that will span all platforms, a western-side platform extension, four new escalators, and three lifts to cater to increased demand and support universal accessibility. Officials confirmed that the upgrades are aligned with global urban transit benchmarks, seeking to embed inclusive infrastructure and eco-conscious design principles. MRVC has targeted 17 stations in total for redevelopment under MUTP 3A, with similar modernisation works progressing at Kandivali, Mira Road, Bhayander, Vasai, and several locations on the Central and Harbour Lines. Each site is being equipped with improved passenger dispersal systems, contemporary ticketing counters, CCTV-monitored security systems, and climate-resilient structures that aim to better serve Mumbai’s 8-million-plus daily suburban rail users.

Officials overseeing the project underscored the role of infrastructure upgrades in enabling modal shift towards public transport, a key component in reducing the city’s carbon footprint and improving the urban quality of life. The ongoing station enhancements are being executed with sensitivity to gender-neutral and accessible design, aiming to serve all demographic profiles more efficiently. While civil work continues at many other MUTP sites, Nalasopara’s operational deck is seen as a tangible example of progress, reinforcing commuter confidence and creating a safer, smoother journey for thousands. The long-term success of the effort will depend on timely completion of pending works and effective inter-agency coordination.
