A Mumbai-bound Indigo flight was delayed by nearly four hours at Jabalpur’s Dumna airport on Monday after the aircraft developed a flat tyre while parked on the apron. The technical snag, although minor in nature, triggered a cascading effect on passenger movement, rerouting, and operational logistics, underlining the challenges of infrastructure preparedness at regional airports.
According to officials at Dumna Airport, the flight from Mumbai had landed around noon without any incident. However, shortly after passengers had deboarded safely, the aircraft’s rear tyre was found deflated. As a result, the return flight scheduled to depart for Mumbai at 12:40 pm was grounded. A replacement tyre had to be airlifted from Delhi, which arrived in the afternoon. Technical teams swiftly replaced the damaged tyre, and the aircraft finally took off at around 5:30 pm. Most of the passengers who had booked for the onward journey were accommodated on alternate routes via Bengaluru and Delhi, airport officials confirmed.
While there were no safety concerns or injuries reported, the incident threw light on the operational readiness of Tier-2 airports like Jabalpur in handling unscheduled technical disruptions. Aviation experts pointed out the urgent need for regional airports to strengthen on-ground maintenance response and inventory reserves. The airport director confirmed that no passengers were onboard during the tyre deflation and commended the prompt coordination between the airline, ground staff, and regulatory bodies. He acknowledged, however, that reliance on metro cities for spares such as tyres can prolong recovery times during peak hours.
From a wider industry perspective, the incident illustrates the stress placed on India’s aviation infrastructure amid growing air traffic. As domestic air travel surges across regional circuits, especially with rising connectivity under the UDAN scheme, the requirement for robust airport logistics and real-time troubleshooting mechanisms becomes critical.
