Noida Enforces 10 km Construction Ban Around Jewar Airport for Safety

Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has imposed a strict construction ban within a 10-kilometre radius of the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar. The regulation, which aligns with aviation safety norms, is intended to maintain obstruction-free air corridors and protect the operational efficiency of the mega aviation project.

The enforcement follows detailed consultations with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which raised concerns about unregulated vertical development in close proximity to the airport’s air funnel. Officials have confirmed that the restriction applies to all types of new constructions—including commercial, residential, and industrial—within the demarcated zone until height clearance is granted by the relevant aviation bodies. This 10-kilometre radius includes rapidly urbanising sectors under the jurisdiction of YEIDA, where real estate developers have shown strong interest due to the anticipated economic impact of the Jewar airport. However, the new directive mandates that every new project within this buffer zone must undergo height clearance protocols from the AAI before receiving building plan approvals.

According to senior officials, this move is not intended to stall development but to regulate it. Authorities are now working to streamline a mechanism for real-time coordination between the local development body and aviation regulators to avoid project delays while ensuring compliance. Developers who already have sanctioned plans but have not commenced construction may also be asked to revalidate their projects if found in violation of the revised safety norms. The 10-kilometre ban is being viewed as a proactive step in urban planning that balances economic growth with aviation safety. Urban planners and sustainability experts have welcomed the move, suggesting that this sets a precedent for future infrastructure projects where environmental and safety assessments are given primacy over unchecked urban expansion.

The Noida International Airport, expected to be operational by late 2025, is set to become a critical aviation hub in north India, handling over 12 million passengers annually in its first phase. The airport’s connectivity via the Yamuna Expressway and proposed high-speed metro links to Greater Noida and Delhi are expected to further catalyse regional development. However, officials have reiterated that maintaining navigational safety remains non-negotiable. This regulation also aligns with global best practices seen around major international airports, where vertical development restrictions are in place to mitigate aviation risks. YEIDA is also planning awareness drives for stakeholders in the real estate and construction sectors to ensure smoother implementation of these safety protocols.

As the national discourse around sustainable urbanisation grows louder, Noida’s decision marks a critical inflection point in embedding aviation safety into the city’s urban development agenda.
