BMC’s Tax Collection Drive Gains Momentum Despite Public Criticism

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has achieved a commendable milestone by collecting Rs 2,214 crore in property tax as of Wednesday afternoon, representing approximately 49% of its targeted revenue of Rs 4,500 crore for the fiscal year 2023-24. This significant achievement comes amidst public criticism and scrutiny over the handling of property tax billing processes.

Following backlash from citizens and public representatives regarding property tax bills issued in December last year, which included unwarranted hikes, the BMC took corrective measures by withdrawing the contentious bills. Subsequently, the civic body commenced issuing property tax bills towards the end of February without any increases, aiming to alleviate confusion among taxpayers. Despite the delayed issuance of property tax bills, the BMC has urged Mumbaikars to cooperate by fulfilling their property tax obligations by March 31. However, citizens are granted an extended deadline until May 25 to settle their property tax dues without incurring any interest or penalty. BMC anticipates achieving its revenue target for the fiscal year 2023-24 by the stipulated deadline.

This strategic approach underscores BMC’s commitment to enhancing transparency and accountability in its financial operations while ensuring taxpayer satisfaction. By addressing public concerns and implementing corrective measures, the civic body aims to foster trust and confidence among stakeholders, thereby facilitating smoother tax compliance processes in the future.
