Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’s municipal administration has confirmed that the vital Champa Chowk to Jalna Road stretch will be widened to 100 feet, adhering strictly to the 2001 Development Plan (DP). This critical infrastructure project, while promising to revitalise the old city and enhance connectivity, is anticipated to impact approximately 700 properties. The decision underscores a commitment to urban modernisation, balancing development imperatives with the complex social and economic considerations of affected citizens in their pursuit of a safer, more equitable city.

The confirmation from the municipal administrator comes amidst growing confusion and speculation regarding potential alignment changes proposed in the revised 2025 DP. By committing to the 2001 DP’s designation of a consistent 100-foot width for the entire stretch, the administration aims to provide clarity and stability to the project. A total station survey and ground marking are slated to commence soon, initiating the practical phase of this significant urban transformation. This adherence to a consistent plan is vital for transparent governance and building public trust in large-scale infrastructure projects.

The road widening project is deemed vital for the revitalisation of the old city, expected to improve traffic flow, enhance accessibility for emergency services, and attract tourism, particularly drawn to the region’s culinary heritage. However, the project’s human impact is substantial, with an estimated 700 properties in localities such as Jinsi, Sanjaynagar, Dada Colony, Kailasnagar, and Dutt Colony, facing acquisition. This scale of displacement necessitates a robust and empathetic approach to rehabilitation and compensation, ensuring that the benefits of development are equitably distributed and no citizen is left without support.

In addressing the concerns of affected property owners, the administration has affirmed that those with valid ownership documents will be eligible for Transferable Development Rights (TDRs). Furthermore, assurances have been made regarding the upward revision of TDR rates, and rehabilitation housing worth ₹1 lakh will be provided to those rendered homeless. These measures aim to mitigate the socio-economic impact on affected families, although residents express apprehension about potential legal complications arising from alignment discrepancies with earlier TDR allocations. The project’s urgency was powerfully underscored by a tragic fire incident in Cantonment in April 2023, where narrow lanes impeded emergency access, resulting in seven fatalities.
