Puducherry Airport Expansion Plan Unveiled For Enhanced Regional Connectivity

The Union Government has unveiled a comprehensive master plan for the expansion of Puducherry airport, a strategic move poised to significantly enhance regional connectivity and foster sustainable economic development. This ambitious blueprint includes provisions for enabling operations of larger aircraft and the potential introduction of new flight routes, contingent on commercial viability. The upgrade underscores a commitment to modernising infrastructure, crucial for a zero net carbon future and ensuring equitable access to air travel for all citizens.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has formulated a detailed proposal to upgrade the airport’s existing infrastructure. A key component of this plan involves extending the runway to an impressive 2,300 metres in length and 45 metres in width. This critical enhancement will facilitate the operation of Airbus A320 aircraft, which are widely utilised for domestic commercial aviation. Such an upgrade is vital for accommodating increased passenger traffic and cargo movement, thereby boosting trade and tourism in the region.

To realise this significant expansion, a total of 402 acres of land will be required. This includes 217 acres in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu and 185 acres within the Union Territory of Puducherry itself. The proposal has already been formally shared with the Puducherry government for necessary action, initiating the crucial phase of land acquisition and inter-state coordination. Successful collaboration between the Union Territory and Tamil Nadu will be paramount for the timely execution of this transformative project.

Currently, Puducherry airport operates limited services, offering flights exclusively to Bangalore and Hyderabad. The proposed expansion aims to overcome the limitations posed by the existing short runway and land constraints, which have historically restricted operations to smaller aircraft. While the Ministry of Civil Aviation maintains a deregulated stance on routes and destinations, allowing airlines autonomy based on commercial and operational considerations, the enhanced infrastructure will undoubtedly open up new possibilities for carriers to initiate services to additional cities, including potential routes to Kochi and Shirdi.

This expansion is anticipated to be a game-changer for Puducherry and its surrounding areas, promising better connectivity, a significant boost to the tourism sector, and enhanced economic development. By facilitating greater air access, the project will not only attract more visitors and businesses but also contribute to a more integrated regional economy. This infrastructure investment aligns with the broader goals of creating sustainable and equitable cities by providing efficient, low-carbon transportation options and fostering inclusive growth for all segments of society.
