Mumbai, the city’s beloved “Van Rani,” the iconic toy train of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), is set to resume operations, four years after its services were suspended. Heavily damaged by Cyclone Tauktae in 2021, the refurbished train now boasts a modern Vistadome design, equipped with transparent roofs and large glass windows. Its return is poised to significantly boost tourism in North Mumbai and provide an engaging, eco-friendly experience for visitors, nature lovers, and children alike.
The refurbished Van Rani, which has arrived from Ahmedabad, has already commenced its trial runs and is expected to resume regular service during the current monsoon weeks. The original yellow-coloured, jungle-themed train from the 1970s was a cherished ride for generations; the new version, sporting a red and black design, runs on battery power, making it far more environmentally friendly than its previous diesel-powered iteration. Its four coaches are adorned with illustrations of SGNP’s wildlife and nature, offering an educational touch to the journey.
The train boasts an increased capacity of around 80 passengers, a significant upgrade from its earlier version. Its route spans 5.5 sq km through the Krishna Giri sub-forest, taking riders past rich biodiversity zones, a mini-zoo, and artificial tunnels, ensuring a thrilling and immersive experience. The transparent roofs and large windows provide sweeping views of the natural surroundings, complemented by a comfortable metro-style seating layout. A second toy train, featuring completely open coaches, is also expected to arrive soon, further enhancing the immersive nature experience for park visitors.

The toy train commences its journey at the butterfly-shaped KrishnaGiri Station, proceeding to Trimurti station before returning. The SGNP administration plans to offer branding and advertising opportunities on the trains and at the stations, with generated revenue earmarked for park maintenance. A Union Minister for Commerce & Industry, also a Member of Parliament from Mumbai North, has consistently championed the resumption of the toy train, emphasizing its role not just as a children’s attraction but as a symbol of sustainable and inclusive tourism, fostering environmental education and awareness.
Across Mumbai, the return of the revamped Van Rani marks a nostalgic and eco-friendly milestone, offering visitors an immersive nature experience within the city’s green lung. Its resumption aims to significantly boost tourism and enhance environmental awareness, solidifying its place as a cherished attraction in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and promising joy for generations to come.
