Maharashtra is accelerating critical infrastructure development with a directive to complete the renovation and expansion of Shirdi Airport ahead of the significant Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela. This strategic move aims to enhance regional connectivity and accommodate the anticipated surge in pilgrim traffic, simultaneously bolstering the state’s air service network. The focus extends beyond immediate pilgrimage needs, laying groundwork for long-term economic growth and sustainable urban accessibility.
The comprehensive expansion of Shirdi Airport encompasses a new air traffic control building, an integrated cargo facility, and an expanded terminal building. These vital upgrades are being fast-tracked to ensure full operational readiness before the commencement of the upcoming Kumbh Mela. The urgency reflects the administration’s commitment to facilitating seamless travel and logistics, underscoring the airport’s pivotal role in supporting large-scale events and regional economic activity. Efforts are underway to deploy additional resources to meet the stringent timelines.
Shirdi Airport holds a crucial strategic position, being the closest air facility to the major urban centres of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. This proximity positions it as a potential hub for parking smaller aircraft, alleviating pressure on larger metropolitan airports. Future considerations include the potential acquisition of additional land to further augment facilities, indicating a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure planning that anticipates growing demand and ensures long-term operational efficiency.
Parallel to the Shirdi project, significant progress is also noted for the Greenfield airport at Purandar in Pune district. Following a completed survey, the immediate commencement of land acquisition processes is mandated to expedite the airport’s construction. This new facility is poised to substantially expand Maharashtra’s overall air service network, enhancing connectivity across the state and fostering economic development by creating new logistical corridors and improving access to burgeoning industrial and agricultural regions.

The emphasis on timely and efficient airport development aligns with broader objectives of creating sustainable and eco-friendly urban ecosystems. Modern airport infrastructure, when planned with environmental considerations, can reduce travel-related carbon footprints by optimising routes and promoting efficient operations. Furthermore, enhanced air connectivity contributes to equitable access for citizens to various regions, fostering balanced economic growth and reducing reliance on less sustainable modes of long-distance travel, thereby supporting the vision of zero net carbon cities.
