Nagpur Braces for Rainy Days Till July 21, Humidity Levels to Ease

Nagpur is set to witness a spell of extended rainfall activity till July 21, offering temporary relief from the sweltering humidity that has gripped the city in recent days. As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), fairly widespread showers are likely to continue over Nagpur and the surrounding Vidarbha region through July 17, followed by scattered rain until July 21. The monsoon activity picked up on Tuesday as several neighbourhoods in both urban and rural parts of Nagpur experienced heavy rain.

The IMD’s surface observatory at Sonegaon recorded 29 mm of rainfall, with southwest pockets of the city receiving more intense precipitation accompanied by thunder. According to senior officials at the Regional Meteorological Centre, monsoonal conditions will remain active over the next few days. The sky will stay mostly overcast, with short but frequent spells of rain, particularly during afternoons and evenings. This shift in weather is being attributed to the presence of two synoptic systems currently influencing the central Indian plains.

A depression over North Rajasthan and a well-marked low-pressure zone across North Jharkhand and South Bihar are drawing in moisture from the Bay of Bengal. This influx has triggered rainfall in Vidarbha, although both systems are slowly drifting away, likely reducing rainfall intensity by the end of the week. Despite the rain, temperatures in Nagpur are expected to remain steady, with maximum daytime temperatures between 31°C and 33°C and minimum temperatures around 25°C to 26°C. Humidity levels, however, may still hover above 75%, causing persistent discomfort even as the rain cools the air.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and avoid exposure to open spaces or metallic surfaces during lightning episodes. Although no official weather warnings have been issued for July 18 to 21, weather experts advise people to stay informed through official updates. From a civic preparedness standpoint, emergency monsoon control rooms have been kept on alert to respond to any localised flooding or waterlogging issues, which are common in lower-lying zones of the city during such spells.

While the current rainfall provides some respite, the broader concern of below-normal seasonal precipitation continues to loom over Nagpur. Officials are watching the monsoon trend closely to assess if cumulative rainfall will align with long-term averages. With monsoon conditions active and systems still impacting the central belt, Nagpur residents are encouraged to brace for a mixed bag of cloudy skies, intermittent rainfall, and humid air over the coming days.
