Adani Power Revives Dormant 600 MW Butibori Plant After Recent Acquisition

Adani Power, a leading energy conglomerate, has successfully reactivated the 600 MW Butibori power plant, which had been non-operational for over five years. This significant development comes on the heels of the company’s acquisition of the plant from a previous owner for Rs 4,000 crore in July 2025. The 2×300 MW facility had been shut since 2019, with its systems corroded and licenses expired. Hopes for its revival appeared dim after its financial collapse and admission to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in 2023, making Adani’s swift intervention a notable surprise for the power sector.

Upon dispatching a dedicated revival team to Butibori, engineers discovered daunting challenges, including severely corroded machinery, deteriorated systems, and a complete absence of experienced staff due to the prolonged shutdown. Despite these formidable obstacles, the conglomerate’s engineers worked relentlessly. Critical spares were promptly flown in, specialized repairs were meticulously carried out, and a flurry of activity ensured that all necessary licenses, permits, and statutory approvals were renewed in record time. As a result of these concerted efforts, the plant is now feeding power into the national grid, although it has not yet reached its full capacity.

Industry experts suggest that while the plant is now operational, significant work remains. Decades-old systems are in need of modern upgrades, and the current focus is shifting towards automation and significantly boosting overall efficiency. This indicates that the initial revival is a foundational step, and continued investment in technology and operational improvements will be crucial to ensure the facility achieves its full potential and contributes optimally to the national power supply for the long term, strengthening India’s energy infrastructure.

The successful revival of the Butibori power plant by Adani Power underscores the conglomerate’s strategic vision in infrastructure development. This achievement not only adds crucial capacity to the national grid but also signals renewed economic activity in the region. It exemplifies how corporate initiative can transform dormant assets into productive ones, contributing to energy security and industrial growth.
