Delhi to launch eco-friendly Yamuna cruise services between Sonia Vihar–Jagatpur November

Delhi will experience a new dimension of urban leisure with the launch of cruise services along the Yamuna River, between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur. This ambitious initiative is a pivotal component of the government’s comprehensive efforts to rejuvenate the river, aiming to promote tourism and foster a more eco-friendly urban environment. The project underscores a strategic shift towards leveraging waterways for sustainable mobility and recreational purposes.

An eight-kilometre stretch of the Yamuna, from the Wazirabad barrage (Sonia Vihar) to Jagatpur (Shani temple), has been meticulously developed to facilitate these cruise operations. This development is a collaborative endeavour, with five key agencies—the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC), and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department—signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bring this vision to fruition. Such inter-agency cooperation is crucial for complex urban projects that span environmental, infrastructure, and tourism domains.

The DDA is providing land for jetty development, while the Irrigation and Flood Control Department will ensure navigational aids and shore facilities, including essential charging infrastructure for the cruises. Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra confirmed that the work has been awarded, and jetty construction is underway, with services anticipated to commence in November. This move is expected to offer Delhiites a unique upstream travel experience, diversifying the city’s transport options and enhancing its appeal as a tourist destination.

A significant aspect of this project is its commitment to environmental sustainability. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had earlier announced the introduction of eco-friendly electric-solar hybrid boats, designed with inboard bio-toilets (zero discharge) and safety features. This focus on clean technology is paramount for the Yamuna, a river that has historically faced severe pollution challenges. By promoting sustainable travel and ensuring zero discharge, the project directly contributes to the river’s ecological restoration and aligns with the broader goal of creating zero net carbon and eco-friendly cities.

The vision extends beyond mere cruise services; Chief Minister Gupta envisions the Yamuna ghats evolving into vibrant cultural and artistic hubs, mirroring the transformation seen in Varanasi. This holistic approach combines environmental restoration with cultural revitalisation, aiming to create inclusive and gender-neutral public spaces. The continuous commitment to Yamuna cleaning efforts and ongoing development work underscores a long-term strategy for building a resilient, sustainable, and culturally rich urban environment that benefits all citizens.
