Delhi-NCR is set to significantly enhance its urban infrastructure with the proposed 20-kilometre extension of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) to the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway. This pivotal development, commonly referred to as the national capital’s third Ring Road, aims to substantially alleviate persistent traffic congestion and bolster regional connectivity. The initiative underscores a strategic commitment to fostering more efficient and sustainable metropolitan mobility.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has officially invited bids for consultancy services to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this crucial extension. With an approximate length of 20 kilometres, the proposed stretch is designed to traverse through Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. This multi-state connectivity is a key objective, aiming to streamline inter-state movement and reduce the burden on the two existing, heavily utilised ring roads that currently serve the sprawling metropolitan region.
The necessity for this new arterial link is underscored by the daily commuting challenges faced by millions. For instance, the 28-30 kilometre journey between Delhi and Gurugram frequently extends to a frustrating 90 minutes due to bumper-to-bumper traffic. Such chronic congestion not only impacts productivity and quality of life but also contributes significantly to air pollution and increased fuel consumption, posing substantial environmental and economic costs to the urban ecosystem. The extension of UER-II is envisioned as a strategic intervention to mitigate these pervasive issues. By providing an additional high-capacity corridor, it will divert traffic from congested city centres, thereby enhancing overall traffic flow and reducing travel times. This improved fluidity is crucial for fostering a more efficient urban environment, supporting economic activities, and enhancing the daily lives of countless commuters who navigate the complex road network.
