Tiruvallur Freight Train Fire Disrupts Services, Cancels Long-Distance Rail Operations

Rail services in and around Tiruvallur were thrown into disarray on July 13, 2025, after a freight train wagon transporting fuel caught fire between Tiruvallur and Egattur. The incident severely impacted suburban and long-distance train schedules, including high-speed services and express trains, prompting large-scale cancellations and diversions.

Southern Railway officials confirmed that five wagons were extensively damaged in the fire, which resulted in thick smoke blanketing the surrounding locality. Fire and rescue teams took over two hours to contain the blaze. As a safety measure, overhead electric supply lines were deactivated, further suspending regular train operations across the corridor. Authorities from the railway and state disaster management teams mobilised immediately to secure the area, prevent escalation, and begin restoration work. Despite challenges, officials stated that normal train movement would resume soon, although several trains remained cancelled or short-terminated.

Eight long-distance trains including key intercity services were fully cancelled, while others were redirected via alternative sections such as Gudur. Suburban rail operations on the Chennai-Arakkonam stretch were significantly affected, with services restricted to the Avadi zone. The disruption impacted thousands of daily commuters reliant on these crucial rail links. Egattur, the halt station near the site, serves as an important node for freight and passenger movement, making the disruption more pronounced. Authorities have released emergency helpline numbers to support affected passengers. Experts noted the fire underscores the need for tighter fuel transport protocols, enhanced fire safety systems, and stronger disaster preparedness across India’s rapidly expanding rail freight network.

While there were no reported injuries, the incident has triggered a comprehensive safety audit of similar freight corridors transporting inflammable materials. Officials have assured that restoration and safety validation efforts are ongoing, and additional updates will be issued as services are restored.
