Visakhapatnam Railway Station Introduces Sleeping Pods for Budget-Friendly Traveller Stays
Visakhapatnam railway station has introduced a first-of-its-kind capsule hotel with sleeping pods, offering secure, hygienic, and budget accommodation for travellers. Operated under Indian Railways’ non-fare revenue model, this facility by the Waltair Division aims to meet rising demand from commuters and visitors who often struggle to find nearby lodging.
With this pilot project, Visakhapatnam positions itself at the forefront of sustainable and commuter-centric rail infrastructure development, catering to tourism, medical, educational, and industrial travellers. The facility, strategically located at Platform No. 1 near Gate No. 3, comprises 88 ergonomically designed pods: 73 single, 15 double, and 18 earmarked exclusively for women. The women’s section includes modern washrooms, dressing rooms, and private halls designed to enhance privacy and safety. Importantly, the facility is open to all, regardless of train ticket possession, making it a broader urban hospitality solution.
Officials highlight that the concept draws inspiration from global capsule hotel models, adapted to Indian commuter needs. Priced modestly—₹200 for three hours and ₹400 for 24 hours for a single pod—the accommodation provides 24/7 hot water, free Wi-Fi, secure luggage storage, snack counters, and dedicated travel desks. Double beds are priced at ₹300 and ₹600, respectively. Passengers have already responded positively to the initiative. Travellers arriving after long journeys, or pilgrims visiting nearby sites, described the facility as a much-needed alternative to overcrowded or unavailable hotels. With its central location and low cost, the pod hotel offers convenience, cleanliness, and an efficient stopover solution.
Officials note that the project also supports environmental sustainability goals. By efficiently utilising underused station real estate, it minimises the need for new land development while generating additional revenue for Indian Railways. Furthermore, the pods align with urban resilience and equitable service goals, especially for solo women travellers. The complex is under 24-hour surveillance and security. Depending on demand, authorities may introduce online booking for added convenience. For now, the facility represents a strategic blend of urban innovation, passenger care, and sustainable business modelling within the national rail ecosystem.
