Uttar Pradesh is poised to transform Kanpur into a global electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing powerhouse with a ₹700 crore investment in a 500-acre EV park near Bhimsen, strategically located along the Dedicated Freight Corridor. Spearheaded by the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) under the Kanpur Metropolitan Development Vision 2030, this public-private partnership (PPP) project promises to drive sustainable urban growth and economic prosperity.
The EV park is designed to capitalise on India’s surging demand for electric vehicles, with Uttar Pradesh leading as the top state for EV sales in 2024. By establishing manufacturing units for electric motors, lithium-ion batteries, chargers, and electronic components, the park aims to strengthen local supply chains and promote indigenous production under the ‘Make in UP’ initiative. An integrated EV components cluster will empower small and medium enterprises, fostering inclusive economic opportunities for Kanpur’s workforce.
Strategically positioned near the freight corridor, the park ensures seamless logistics, reducing transportation costs and emissions. The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation’s planned Multimodal Logistics Park in Kanpur will further enhance connectivity, making the city an attractive hub for domestic and global investors. This aligns with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of a trillion-dollar economy, with the EV park expected to create over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, uplifting local communities.
The project underscores Kanpur’s commitment to sustainable development. By accelerating EV production, it aims to cut carbon emissions, supporting India’s net-zero goals. The focus on green manufacturing resonates with residents like Anil Kumar, a local entrepreneur, who sees the park as a chance to build a cleaner, more equitable future for his children. Community engagement initiatives will ensure gender-neutral job opportunities, reinforcing social inclusivity.
Kanpur’s transformation into an EV hub is a beacon of industrial innovation. The park will house research and development units, positioning the city as a leader in EV technology. With 23% of India’s EVs operating in Uttar Pradesh, as per 2024 transport ministry data, the project is set to meet rising demand while reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based transport.
As Kanpur embraces this eco-friendly vision, the EV park promises to redefine the city’s identity, blending economic growth with environmental stewardship. By fostering a sustainable, inclusive ecosystem, Kanpur is not just building vehicles but paving the way for a greener, more equitable urban future, inspiring cities nationwide.
