A low-pressure system hovering over Gangetic West Bengal is expected to bring very heavy rainfall to Kolkata and several South Bengal districts on 8 July, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC). Authorities have issued alerts and urged residents to prepare for waterlogging, local flooding, and potential transport disruptions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported widespread moderate rainfall across the city on 7 July, with intensifying conditions expected over the next 24 to 48 hours. The low-pressure area, coupled with strong monsoon winds, is likely to move slowly across Jharkhand and North Chhattisgarh over the next two days, continuing to impact eastern India. Officials said that isolated pockets in South Bengal, including Purulia and Jhargram, are likely to receive heavy to very heavy showers, ranging between 7 cm and 11 cm. The IMD has also forecast gusty winds between 30 and 40 kmph, accompanied by lightning. In addition to Kolkata, heavy showers are predicted for South 24 Parganas, Paschim Medinipur, and Jhargram.
The broader seven-day outlook for Kolkata includes generally cloudy skies, with intermittent rain or thundershowers persisting until 13 July. Daytime temperatures are expected to range from 31°C to 33°C, while nights will remain humid with lows around 26°C to 28°C. The IMD warns that early morning and late evening periods may see more intense rainfall. Northern Bengal is also on alert, with districts such as Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Alipurduar likely to receive heavy rainfall on 9 and 13 July. Widespread rain and thundershowers are forecast for both regions through the week.
As Kolkata gears up for another intense bout of monsoon rainfall, civic officials have reiterated calls for timely drainage and flood-preparedness measures. With urban resilience a growing concern, experts stress that sustainable stormwater management and climate-adaptive infrastructure are essential to minimise disruption in such peak monsoon conditions.
