India’s next big mobility leap is on the move, with an expansive roadmap aiming to transform mass transport across both urban and remote areas. Featuring futuristic systems like hyperloop, ropeways, cable cars, and electric buses, the multi-modal upgrade plan also includes a green push through flex-fuel vehicles and tree banks. Authorities have announced over 60 ropeway projects underway, and national highway expansion targets of 100 km per day, all pointing toward a mobility revolution in motion.
At the heart of the new mobility vision is a plan to decongest cities and energise under-served rural zones using a mix of high-speed and eco-conscious transport technologies. From Delhi to Bengaluru and beyond, pilot projects include hyperloop, funicular railways, pod taxis, and 135-seater electric rapid transit buses with airline-grade amenities. Authorities confirmed ropeway and cable car systems are being deployed at 360 locations, with active construction at 60 sites. The transformation will be backed by major highway upgrades—25,000 km of two-lane roads will be converted to four lanes, while national high-speed corridors are growing rapidly. A senior official highlighted that construction speed aims to touch 100 km per day, aided by technologies like precast concrete, AI road monitoring, and drone surveillance. With flex-fuel vehicles now part of automaker pipelines, India also aims to reduce dependency on fuel imports, cut emissions, and bring down logistics costs significantly by year-end.
The ambitious transport plan includes a sweeping green mobility component. Authorities estimate the sector accounts for nearly 40% of India’s air pollution, prompting innovations such as electric buses capable of recharging in under 40 minutes, running at speeds over 120 km/hr, and operating at 30% lower cost than diesel alternatives. The pilot bus service is being tested in Nagpur, with plans to expand across key corridors including Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Jaipur, and Mumbai-Pune. National highways are also receiving a facelift with 670 world-class roadside amenities approved, aiming to improve commuter and driver experience. A proposal for a nationwide tree bank, paired with a pledge to transplant old trees and plant five for every one cut, is awaiting final clearance. A senior official confirmed that these projects will not only improve road quality and commuter comfort but also drive economic growth, employment, and infrastructure resilience—helping align India’s transport transformation with climate and development goals.
India’s mega mobility plan signals a decisive shift toward high-speed, sustainable and inclusive transport. From hyperloop corridors to EV-powered buses and cable-run systems in remote zones, the strategy aligns innovation with accessibility. Authorities envision this not just as a physical overhaul but a green revolution with economic ripple effects—cutting logistics costs, reducing pollution, and enhancing national connectivity. With road upgrades, eco-technologies, and public-private collaboration accelerating, India’s transport transformation is set to redefine how millions move daily. The success of pilot projects and systemic scaling could position the country as a global model for future-ready mass mobility infrastructure.
