In a strategic move to enhance safety measures and mitigate potential hazards, the waste dumping site managed by the Kochi Corporation at Brahmapuram is set to introduce a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) tailored for emergency situations.
Under the directive of Industries Minister P. Rajeeve, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has been tasked with formulating this SOP, aimed at delineating precise protocols for swift response and effective management during emergencies. It will outline key personnel to be contacted and delineate the specific roles and responsibilities of each individual involved in rescue and relief operations. At the core of this initiative is a commitment to regular review and refinement of the action plan through weekly meetings, ensuring preparedness to combat fire incidents. Moreover, proactive measures are being undertaken to fortify infrastructure, with approximately ₹25 lakh allocated for enhancing road access within the site. To bolster operational resilience, the installation of additional fire hydrants and monitors is underway, complemented by routine test drives of fire tenders to optimise response efficiency. A 200-KW generator has been deployed, supplemented by plans for an additional unit, to address potential power outages.
Further reinforcing safety measures, a water tank with a capacity of one lakh litres is nearing completion, augmenting fire suppression capabilities. In tandem, surveillance enhancements include granting police access to CCTV facilities on-site, while pre-emptive measures such as periodic water spraying are being implemented to mitigate fire risks, particularly during summer months. This proactive approach underscores a concerted effort towards ensuring the safety and security of the waste dumping yard, aligning with broader objectives of environmental stewardship and operational resilience.
