Andhra’s 2,500 New Buses to Transform Women’s Access and Public Mobility

Andhra Pradesh is set to induct over 2,500 new buses to its public transport fleet as part of a large-scale initiative to support the free travel scheme for women. Authorities expect a nearly 78% rise in women’s trips across the state once the scheme launches on August 15, with a strong focus on sustainable mobility and improved commuter infrastructure.

Officials estimate that over ₹996 crore will be needed to integrate 2,536 buses into the existing Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) fleet. With no major additions in recent years, the current fleet is under-equipped to handle the anticipated surge in women’s travel demand. The upcoming rollout of the scheme has pushed authorities to prioritise not just fleet expansion, but overall service quality improvements across key bus stations.

Projections suggest the number of journeys by women will rise from 49.91 crore to 88.90 crore annually, marking a 78% spike. Officials are working on options including new purchases, rentals, and electric conversions to meet demand. As per guidelines, all new buses inducted will be electric and air-conditioned, aligning with the state’s push towards clean energy and environmentally responsible public transport infrastructure.

Beyond buses, authorities plan significant upgrades to bus stations, including better drinking water, sanitation facilities, GPS tracking, and passenger information systems. These enhancements are meant to improve the commuter experience for women and reduce overall service delays. Cleanliness, digital integration, and accessibility are key focus areas, with stakeholders encouraged to adopt private maintenance models and explore efficient charging or battery-swapping infrastructure.

Despite financial constraints, the state remains committed to launching the scheme on August 15. The administration is exploring alternative funding methods, including operational cost cuts and power self-generation models for electric vehicles. Officials have been advised to study best-practice implementation models from other regions and ensure that public funds are used efficiently to deliver long-term transport and environmental gains.

Andhra Pradesh’s ambitious move to implement free travel for women through a massive bus induction programme highlights its twin goals: equitable mobility and sustainable transport. With electric buses, GPS-enabled monitoring, and upgraded facilities, the state aims to redefine public transport. As officials balance fiscal responsibility and service delivery, this initiative could reshape both access and efficiency in mass transit for women.
