Pune-Nashik semi high-speed rail corridor project, aimed at enhancing connectivity between two key industrial hubs in Maharashtra, is embroiled in controversy over its proposed alignment. The original route, designed to pass through Narayangaon, Manchar, and Sinnar, has been contested due to potential interference with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) located in Khodad, approximately 80 km north of Pune.
The GMRT, operated by the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), is the world’s largest low-frequency radio telescope array. Scientists have expressed concerns that electromagnetic interference from the high-speed trains could disrupt the telescope’s sensitive observations. As a result, the Union Ministry of Railways proposed an alternative alignment via Ahilyanagar and Shirdi, which would bypass the GMRT’s operational area. However, this proposed realignment has faced strong opposition from political leaders, particularly from Nashik. Former Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal has been vocal in advocating for the original route, arguing that the new alignment would extend the journey by approximately 80 km, undermining the project’s efficiency and economic benefits. Bhujbal has suggested the construction of an underground tunnel near the GMRT to mitigate interference, a proposal that has been met with mixed reactions.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has acknowledged the concerns raised by Bhujbal and other stakeholders. While expressing support for the revised alignment to protect the GMRT, Fadnavis has indicated a willingness to explore alternative solutions that balance scientific interests with infrastructural development. The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (Maharail), responsible for the project’s implementation, is currently reviewing both the original and proposed alignments. A final decision is expected after thorough consultations with all concerned parties, including the NCRA and local stakeholders.
This development underscores the complex interplay between scientific research, technological advancement, and infrastructure development. As Maharashtra continues to pursue ambitious projects to bolster its economic growth, finding harmonious solutions that respect both scientific integrity and developmental needs will be crucial.
