Hyderabad Guntur Rail Project Receives Central Approval

The Centre has approved the doubling of the 239-kilometre Guntur-Bibinagar rail line at an estimated cost of Rs 2,853 crore. This project, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), is expected to alleviate congestion, enhance connectivity, and stimulate industrial growth in the underdeveloped regions of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The Guntur-Bibinagar rail line serves as a crucial link between the southern and eastern parts of India, connecting Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha with Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. Currently operating as a single-line route, the section faces capacity constraints, leading to delays and limiting the movement of freight and passenger trains. The doubling of this line aims to increase the existing line capacity, smoothen train operations, and improve punctuality, thereby facilitating the introduction of new trains and additional freight transportation . The project is poised to bring substantial economic benefits to the region. By reducing travel time and enhancing the efficiency of freight movement, the doubling of the rail line will lower transportation costs for industries, particularly cement manufacturers in the Palnadu and Nalgonda districts.

The improved connectivity is expected to attract new investments, stimulate industrialisation, and create employment opportunities in these underdeveloped areas . In line with the government’s commitment to sustainable development, the doubling of the Guntur-Bibinagar rail line aligns with the objectives of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. The project aims to promote integrated and holistic planning across ministries and departments, ensuring seamless movement of people, goods, and services. By enhancing rail infrastructure, the project contributes to reducing the carbon footprint associated with road transportation, supporting India’s climate goals .

The South Central Railway (SCR) has initiated the project, dividing the 239-kilometre stretch into multiple packages for efficient execution. The construction is expected to generate direct employment for approximately 75 lakh man-days during its completion. The project is scheduled to be completed by the year 2027-28, with phased implementation to minimise disruptions and ensure timely delivery . The approval of the Guntur-Bibinagar rail doubling project marks a significant step towards enhancing regional connectivity and fostering economic development in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. By improving rail infrastructure, the project not only addresses current capacity constraints but also lays the foundation for sustainable growth and industrialisation in the region.
