Mumbai yellow alert ends clear skies till June 11

Mumbai’s weather saw a notable shift over the weekend as a yellow rain alert in the city subsided early Sunday morning, giving way to an extended forecast of clear skies expected to last until June 11. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert on Saturday afternoon, signalling extremely heavy rainfall for a brief period, but this was quickly downgraded to a yellow alert as the intensity of rain moderated.

The temporary escalation to red alert was driven by a trough extending over Karnataka and Vidarbha, where the interaction of moist and dry winds created conditions favourable for heavy rain in parts of the city. However, the rainfall was unevenly distributed, with some areas like Colaba receiving significantly more precipitation compared to others. For example, while the Santacruz weather station recorded a mere 0.5 millimetres of rain between 8:30 am and 5 pm on Saturday, Colaba registered a much higher 33.4 millimetres during the same time frame. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, the island city received 2.74 millimetres of rainfall, the western suburbs 8.98 millimetres, and the eastern suburbs 18.67 millimetres within that period. Despite the rainfall, temperatures remained lower than the seasonal average, providing some relief from the typical Mumbai heat. Santacruz recorded a maximum temperature of 31.8 degrees Celsius, which is 1.9 degrees below normal, while Colaba noted a maximum of 31 degrees Celsius, 2.7 degrees lower than the usual average. Minimum temperatures were similarly reduced, with Santacruz and Colaba registering 25.5 and 25 degrees Celsius respectively, both roughly 2 degrees below seasonal norms.

The IMD’s forecast for the coming days remains optimistic, with no further rain warnings issued for the next five days. Clear skies and stable weather conditions are expected to prevail, which should benefit city residents and businesses alike. This break in rainfall could provide much-needed respite in terms of reduced waterlogging and better commuting conditions, particularly important for a city like Mumbai, where monsoon-related disruptions often affect daily life and economic activities. Officials highlight that while the recent rains have been moderate, the city must remain vigilant given its vulnerability to heavy monsoon showers in the coming weeks. Sustainable urban planning and effective water management continue to be critical to ensure that Mumbai can cope with both sporadic heavy rainfall and longer dry spells without compromising on residents’ safety and comfort.

As Mumbai transitions into this drier phase, environmental experts emphasise the need to leverage this period to strengthen resilience measures against climate variability, especially in line with the city’s commitment to eco-friendly and sustainable development goals. The shift from intermittent rainfall to clear skies also presents opportunities for increased solar energy utilisation and reduced urban pollution, aligning with broader goals of creating a healthier, greener urban environment. In conclusion, Mumbai’s temporary yellow alert has ended, ushering in a spell of clear and stable weather that is forecast to last until June 11. While this provides welcome relief, continued preparedness and sustainable urban strategies remain vital to manage the city’s complex climate challenges effectively.
