Ahmedabad Ports Reach Zero Waste Milestone

Ahmedabad’s port operations under Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) have achieved Zero Waste to Landfill certification, marking a major sustainability breakthrough. The milestone, announced on World Environment Day, reflects APSEZ’s growing leadership in eco-conscious maritime infrastructure through waste recycling, clean energy adoption, and global ESG recognition across its port network.

In a significant move towards circular economy standards, 12 major ports operated by APSEZ have now secured Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) certification, underscoring a commitment to divert operational waste away from landfills through reuse, recycling, and repurposing. The company revealed that nearly 300 tonnes of plastic waste—equivalent to the weight of about 100 elephants—have been sustainably processed in the past year alone. This achievement aligns with APSEZ’s broader vision to attain net zero emissions by 2040. Already, the company has commissioned 225 megawatts of renewable energy capacity across its assets and continues to integrate clean energy solutions to lower its environmental footprint.

Beyond infrastructure, APSEZ has turned to nature-based climate solutions as part of its mitigation strategy. Over 4,240 hectares of mangrove forests have been cultivated, with another 2,915 hectares conserved, acting as carbon sinks and providing natural defences against coastal erosion and extreme weather. These efforts place sustainability at the heart of port operations once considered carbon-intensive domains.APSEZ’s progress has gained international acclaim. The company retained the top position in the Environment category of the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) 2024 for the second year. It also earned a spot in the top 10 global transportation and infrastructure firms for its overall ESG performance, with a score of 68—up three points from the previous year—placing it in the 97th percentile of its sector.

Further validation came from CDP, a global benchmark on environmental disclosure, which awarded APSEZ an “A-” rating for both climate change and water security—its first inclusion in the leadership band for the latter. Sustainalytics, another major ESG rating agency, ranked the company highest in low carbon transition readiness among marine ports, also assigning it a low-risk ESG rating of 13.7.These benchmarks have not only elevated APSEZ’s status in sustainable investment indices but also qualified it for inclusion in the Nifty 100 ESG Index. Its equity and bond instruments now fall under ‘Prime’ status by ISS ESG, making them eligible for responsible investment portfolios globally.

In a further push towards decarbonising industrial clusters, the Adani Mundra Cluster—comprising APSEZ Mundra Port, Adani New Industries Ltd., and Ambuja Cements Ltd.—has joined the World Economic Forum’s Transitioning Industrial Clusters initiative, committing to net-zero emissions for the zone by 2050.

On a day symbolising global environmental consciousness, APSEZ’s Zero Waste to Landfill milestone reflects how corporate leadership and focused climate action can reshape heavy industries. While many ports globally still grapple with unsustainable waste practices, Ahmedabad has become a beacon for green port operations in the global South.
