Telangana Approves Rs 24,269 Crore Metro Phase 2 Project

The Telangana government has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand the Hyderabad Metro Rail network by over 86 kilometres, aiming to enhance urban mobility and alleviate traffic congestion. This proposed expansion, estimated at ₹19,579 crore, underscores the state’s commitment to sustainable public transport solutions.

The proposed metro expansion seeks to connect key areas across Hyderabad, including the airport, IT hubs, and residential zones. By integrating these regions into the metro network, the project aims to provide seamless connectivity, reduce travel time, and decrease the dependency on private vehicles. This initiative aligns with the state’s vision of promoting eco-friendly and efficient public transport systems. The expansion is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including job creation in construction, operations, and maintenance sectors. Additionally, the project is anticipated to boost local economies by improving access to commercial and residential areas. Environmentally, the metro system is projected to reduce carbon emissions by encouraging the use of public transport over private vehicles, contributing to cleaner air and a reduction in traffic-related pollution.

The Telangana government plans to implement the metro expansion under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This approach aims to leverage private sector efficiency and investment while ensuring public oversight and accountability. The collaboration between the state and central governments, along with private partners, is crucial for the successful execution of this large-scale infrastructure project. The metro expansion is designed to cater to diverse communities, ensuring equitable access to public transport services. By extending metro lines to underserved areas, the project aims to promote social inclusivity and provide affordable transportation options to all residents. This focus on inclusivity reflects the state’s commitment to building equitable and sustainable urban environments.

The proposed 86 km expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail network represents a significant step towards enhancing urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion, and promoting sustainable development in the city. With the support of the central government and private partners, Telangana aims to transform Hyderabad into a model of modern, eco-friendly, and inclusive urban infrastructure.
